Kenya

On 19 August 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Kenya issued a security alert warning that terrorist groups are an ongoing and persistent threat in Nairobi.

Be alert in public places popular with foreigners and tourists including hotels, embassies, restaurants, shopping malls and markets, schools, police stations and places of worship (see ‘Safety’).

We continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution in Kenya overall due to the threat of terrorism and violent crime. Higher levels apply in some areas.

Protests and large demonstrations are common, and security forces may be deployed in response. Avoid large gatherings, monitor the media for updates and follow the advice of local authorities (see ‘Safety’).

If you plan to take part in surrogacy arrangements in Kenya, be aware of all legal and other risks involved (see ‘Local laws’).

We advise:

Exercise a high degree of caution in Kenya overall due to the threat of terrorism and violent crime.

Higher levels apply in some areas.
