Uganda

Uganda is scheduled to hold general elections from January to February 2026 (see ‘Safety’). The presidential election is scheduled on 15 January. Previous elections and political events have led to protests and violence, including deaths.

During periods of political tension, local authorities may increase security measures, restrict movement without notice and impose curfews. Avoid large gatherings. Be prepared for disruptions to travel and essential services, including roadblocks, fuel shortages, ATMs running out of cash and internet blackouts. Ensure you have supplies of water, food, medication, fuel and cash in case there are movement restrictions.

We continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution in Uganda overall. Higher levels apply to the border areas with South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Terrorism remains a threat in Uganda (see ‘Safety’). There’s currently an outbreak of Mpox in parts of Africa, including in Uganda (see ‘Health’).

We advise:

Exercise a high degree of caution in Uganda overall due to the threat of terrorism and violent crime, and the risk of civil unrest.

Higher levels apply in some areas.
