Beaches in French Polynesia are not patrolled. There may be strong currents, even in the lagoons, ask locals before going swimming, obey warning signs and follow the advice of local authorities.

Stray dogs are common. Dog attacks have occurred. Don’t approach or touch dogs (see ‘Safety’).
