Belgium

The new European Entry/Exit System (EES) starts on 12 October for all non-EU nationals, including Australians, travelling in or out of the Schengen Area. You’ll need to register at borders and have your fingerprint and photo taken. There may be longer border queues (see ‘Travel’).

Belgium has also introduced additional entry checks until December 2025. Checks may be carried out on major roads leading into Belgium, motorway car parks, international bus and train services and intra-Schengen flights (see ‘Travel’).

There’s an ongoing threat of terrorism in Belgium. Belgium’s national threat level is set at ‘serious’ – level 3 of 4.  Crowded places such as music and cultural events, festivals, tourist areas, shopping areas, transport hubs, major sporting events and other public areas are possible targets. Be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local authorities (see ‘Safety’).

We advise:

Exercise normal safety precautions in Belgium.
