We continue to advise reconsider your need to travel to Burundi overall. Higher levels apply in some areas. There’s ongoing armed conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) along the border with Burundi. We advise do not travel to areas bordering the DRC, including Cibitoke and Bubanza provinces, Kibira National Park, and parts of Bujumbura Rural province west of Gatumba. Monitor local media for updates on the security situation.
All passengers entering or transiting Burundi must complete an online registration form before travelling (see ‘Travel’). There are limited land border options to leave Burundi and fuel shortages are common. The land border with Rwanda is currently closed (see ‘Safety’).
We advise:
Reconsider your need to travel to Burundi overall due to the threat of terrorism and the risk of civil unrest.
Higher levels apply in some areas.
