China

Scammers are impersonating trusted phone numbers, including those of the Australian Embassy. Never share personal information unless you are certain of the caller’s identity. If you’re unsure, hang up. Contact the organisation to check if calls are genuine before sharing personal details (see ‘Safety’).

We continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution in China. As previously advised, authorities have detained foreigners on the grounds of ‘endangering national security’. Australians may be at risk of arbitrary detention, exit bans or harsh enforcement of local laws, including broadly defined National Security Laws.

We advise:

Exercise a high degree of caution in China overall.
