We continue to advise exercise normal safety precautions in Japan. Following legislative changes to family law, joint child custody after divorce is now possible in some cases. If you’re involved in a dispute over a child or other family matter disputes, it is important to seek legal advice about your options both in Japan and in Australia (see ‘Local laws’). Australians are eligible for Japan’s visa exemption scheme for short-stay tourism and business travel. Currently, you don’t need a visa to travel to Japan for up to 90 days but entry and exit conditions can change at short notice. It is your responsibility to verify visa requirements from the nearest embassy or consulate of Japan.
