Peru

A state of emergency has been declared for Lima and Callao. There will be an increased security presence, with armed forces on the streets (see ‘Safety’). Political protests, demonstrations and strikes are common in Peru, particularly in the historic centre of Lima. Past demonstrations have turned violent and disrupted public transport services, including transport to and from Machu Picchu. Avoid large gatherings and protests. Check media for updates and follow the instructions of local authorities.

We advise:

Exercise a high degree of caution in Peru overall due to the threat of violent crime.

Higher levels apply in some areas.
