Protests are occurring in Tanzania, including in Dar es Salaam, following general elections. There’s a heightened security presence around the country. Authorities recently announced a curfew in Dar es Salaam and more curfews may be enforced at short notice. Travel to and from airports may be affected due to protests and road closures. Flights may also be disrupted. Contact your airline or travel provider for updates about your travel plans. Protests and demonstrations can become violent without warning. Avoid large gatherings, monitor media for updates and follow the instructions of local authorities (see ‘Safety’).
Terrorism and violent crime are risks in Tanzania. Be alert to your surroundings and pay close attention to your personal security (see ‘Safety’). To travel to Zanzibar, you need to buy inbound travel insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation. This insurance coverage is limited, so make sure you also have comprehensive insurance coverage for your travel (see ‘Travel’).
We advise:
Exercise a high degree of caution in Tanzania overall due to the risk of violent crime.
Higher levels apply in some areas.
