Tanzania

We continue to advise reconsider your need to travel overall due to recent civil unrest and violent protests in Tanzania. Following the presidential election in October, the security situation remains unpredictable. This includes the possibility of further demonstrations and firm responses from security forces, particularly around national holidays, such as Independence Day on 9 December.

There is a possibility of unrest, curfews, roadblocks, fuel shortages, internet blackouts, ATMs running out of cash, and cancellation of international flights and ferries. Stock up on essential supplies. Be prepared to change your travel plans and to shelter in place for several days.

Foreigners may experience increased attention from security authorities. Under Tanzanian law, the sharing of pictures or videos that may cause panic is a criminal offence.  There’s reports of security authorities searching electronic devices for politically sensitive content.  Avoid demonstrations and large gatherings (see ‘Safety’).

We advise:

Reconsider your need to travel overall due to recent civil unrest and violent protests and the risk of violent crime.

Higher levels apply in some areas.
