Vietnam

Vietnam doesn’t recognise Australian driver licences or International Driving Permits (IDPs) issued in Australia. You must have a valid Vietnamese driver licence to drive or ride in Vietnam, including for motorcycles of 50cc or more. Authorities may fine visitors for driving without a valid Vietnamese licence and your travel insurer will likely deny any claims.

It’s a crime to use illegal drugs. You can be charged for using them or testing positive for having them in your system while you’re in Vietnam, even if they were consumed outside Vietnam. Penalties for drug offences include the death penalty and life imprisonment. Don’t use or carry illegal drugs and never carry parcels or luggage for others.

Ensure you check your visa details carefully for errors (see ‘Travel’).

The Vietnamese Government won’t permit official Long Tan commemorations at the Long Tan Cross site in Ba Ria Ward, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province). Access to the site will remain open for small groups for private visits. Media coverage isn’t permitted. This may change at short notice. Visitors to the site aren’t permitted to wear medals or uniforms, carry banners or flags. Behave respectfully and respect the wishes of local communities.

We advise:

Exercise normal safety precautions in Vietnam.
